What disappoints me so much about the current plight of the Melbourne & Brisbane bike share schemes is the resigned shrugging of the shoulders from our so-called state cycling advocates. It’s as if they are more interested in trying to save face rather than admitting that their policies may be flawed, while in the meantime two perfectly good schemes that have the potential to transform our cities are left to struggle under their watch. Perhaps if these organisations were forced to own shares in these schemes then we might see a sudden change in their behaviour. Who knows? It’s just that I can’t help thinking that the best interests of cyclists are being seriously let down by those who are supposed to advance the cause of cycling for everyone.
